saudi arabian women & right to drive

Women in Saudi Arabia aren't allowed to drive because a women in control of a car and unescorted would be "un-Islamic". Yet, when Qur’an was written, cars didn't exist yet, so it doesn't seem to be true that it states women can't drive. The group supporting the women is for Protection and Defense of Women’s Rights in Saudi Arabia. A group of Saudi petitioning to get the king to remove the ban on women driving. There was an earlier petition for the same problem in 1990 that the angered the government, but now they are starting to listen. I think it is widely known that women in Saudi Arabia have few rights as it is. The women aren't even allowed to go anywhere without permission from a male. Women in Saudi Arabia, like anywhere else, have responsibilities and business that they need to take care of in their everyday life. It makes it a lot more difficult to get things done when you don't have a means of transportation without a guardian. I first heard about this issue from the New York Times. Though I don't currently drive, I know that in the future it might as well be a requirement. When you have a family you need to take care of, being able to get places is a necessity.
